Unwrapping Life's Surprises with Nicole
Jan 05, 2024Good morning Thrivers!! Happy Friday!!
Lesson reminded this week!
Have you ever "judged a book by it's cover"?
Well, I had a big reminder this week. I had a new patient come in. She was super quiet, meek and by the look of her clothing, she looked impoverished.
During our time together, I asked her questions about who she is, what she liked, what was important to her and what her goals were.
Her answers were all very simple minded.
She was on a ton of different pills and didn't seem to think that was a problem as long as she was "out of pain".
When I asked her what she did before retirement, I got a one word answer, "secretary" she said. Just like that! "Secretary!"
So we scheduled her report of findings with her husband, and after she left, my brain started chatting.
"There is no way she is going to be able to afford care"
"Ugh, I have to stay late, and she's probably not even going to be able to start"
"Get the Care Credit! We're going to need it."
LOL. The stories we make up in our minds about people.
But there was one thing that stood out that she told me in her consultation that didn't fit the "profile".
She was thrown from an elephant on an elephant tour in Africa. This was NOT a woman who rode elephants!
So that made me CURIOUS. When she and her husband returned for the report, the very next day, I asked more curious questions.
I asked the husband things like "what did you do before retirement"? "Construction" was the answer. Here we go again with these one word answers!
"What kind of construction?" "Everything" was the answer.
"What did you like best?"
THAT opened the flood gates. He started telling me how he loved closing the deal, how he kept his books down to the penny and how he took over the family real estate business! Turns out he is a real estate mogul who's passion is building and renting strip malls.
So then, I turned to my patient and asked, "is that where you were as a secretary?" "Did you work in the family business?"
She was like, "No!!! my family has their own company!"
Turns out, her family owns farms and dairy companies all over the state.
